On our project about food: „The main thing is it tastes nice“

During our weeklong project about how to eat sensibly and healthily we visited various places:

We went to a beekeeper who told us how bees produce honey and wax and who showed us how the bees live and work. We also tasted some fresh honey from the honeycomb.

Next we visited a shepherd’s farm. Here the shepherd showed us how to milk a ewe, and we were allowed to milk her, too. We also watched a video about sheep-shearing.

During our visit to an ecologically run farm we saw all the animals there, calves, cows, pigs, horses, chickens, etc. The farmer, a woman, explained to us what biological means: it means that nothing is added to the fields or to the animal food from the outside. The fields are fertilized with animal dung and the animals are fed with the fruit and vegetables and grass that grow on the farm.

On the fourth day we went to the local health center where two women showed us how to clean our teeth properly. They explained how important it is to eat healthy food and look after our teeth.

Our last day started with a healthy breakfast organized by the school cafeteria.

But we did not only visit places and look at bees and sheep. We also did some group work about various other food-topics: How do chips get to the supermarket - Recipes from other countries (in our class there are pupils from nine different countries) - Healthy and tasty: is that possible - How does honey get into the glass - etc. We made posters or wrote questionnaires, we took photos and made drawings.

It was fun and it was interesting, although we had to do a lot of walking along country roads. But that, too, is good for your health, isn’t it. So, if you want to, you could take part in our project: you could answer our internet-questions, you could send us typical national recipes or send us pictures or stories about food and eating. We’re looking forward to news from you!

Yours, class 6c from Velbert Comprehensive
